While interesting, I doubt the overall usefulness. Modern graphics hardware is so fast at processing vertices that the CPU time needed to dynamically modify the mesh and re-send it to the graphics hardware (not to mention the buffer transmission latencies and associated graphics pipeline stalls) is more than what it would take the card to just render the geometry. You're better off just letting the modelers create a few different levels of detail for each mesh, and dynamically choose which to render at run-time based on distance. Then again, you're much more likely to be limited by fill-rate than vertex processing.
